Nailed It!
I have learned so many different hacks online to make life easier, and this is one of my favorites! It is the only way I cut watermelon now, and it gets easier and quicker each time! You can find the original post that I used to learn how to do this HERE.
My favorite tip for picking a perfect watermelon is to look for a flat, yellow spot. They say the spot means it ripened while it was still sitting on the ground attached to the vine instead of being picked too early. Also, look for a lot of straight lined scratches on it. I’ve heard the marks are because it is nice and sweet and bees were trying to get in! The link above also mentions to make sure watermelon is in season, and look for a hollow sounding one that seems heavy for it’s size. I’m not sure how true these are, but they have served me well while picking watermelon! If you have other tips, please leave them in the comments below!
Now that you know how to find a good one, let’s get into the cutting method!
First, you cut the watermelon in half and set one half to the side. Then, cut it in half again so you are working with one quarter of the watermelon.
This is where I do a different order than the original link. She says to cut into your watermelon in the vertical and horizontal rows first and then cut it away from the rind. I think it is much easier to cut it away from the rind first (but leave it sitting in there). You can experiment with which way you prefer.
Now, you pick one of the sides, and slice all the way through to the rind in about 1 inch increments (or however thick you want your slices).
You will do the same thing to the other side, slicing thin strips all the way through.
Now you have long strips of watermelon and you can decide if you want them in long strips that are easy to grab and hold, or smaller cubes that you can easily pierce with a fork or grab with your fingers.
Or you can cut smaller to make cubes!
The fun part is dumping all of the pieces into your bowl or container! It leaves a nice, clean rind behind!
Repeat with the other quarters of the watermelon, and you have used a great little hack to cut your watermelon quickly and efficiently!
Please let me know in the comments if you have tried this watermelon cutting trick, and if it worked for you! You also can pin it or share with your friends who want to have a delicious, watermelon eating summer!
Thanks for the tips! I knew about the hollow sound in the watermelon but not the yellow spot or scratches! I will watch for those from now on!
Great! I hope you find a perfect, juicy one!!
