Dalgona coffee, or “creamy coffee” has gone viral as a favorite quarantine drink! I finally tried it and it is definitely a “Nailed It” recipe! It feels like a big glass of Cool Whip coffee! I tried the original version and it was really good! But, I wanted to try it sugar free, so instead of sugar, I used a stevia/erythritol blend (like Truvia). After I mixed it into unsweetened vanilla almond milk and added ice, it was delicious!!!
Ingredients for coffee whip:
1 Tablespoon Instant Coffee
1 & 1/8th teaspoon Truvia OR 1 Tablespoon Monkfruit blend
1 Tablespoon very hot/boiling Water
Add ingredients to small mixing bowl. Mix with electric mixer for 2-5 minutes (or with a hand whisk around 400 times). Add to unsweetened milk substitute of choice and mix well.
I first did it with equal amounts of each ingredient like the original recipe says, so I used a whole Tablespoon of the stevia because I didn’t look at the conversion chart! ! No wonder it was so sweet and delicious! Here’s how much you are supposed to substitute for sugar. Let me know how much you use to make it just right!
I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk and added ice. I tried it hot too and it was surprisingly good!
From what I’ve seen on Facebook, people either love it or hate it. The original recipe I saw had 2 Tablespoons of each which would have made a lot more and would have been much too strong for me. You can experiment with how much of everything to use as long as you use equal amounts of instant coffee and water.
I also picked up some granulated monkfruit at Costco (Also available at Walmart or Amazon), and that has a 1:1 ratio with sugar, so I used 1 Tablespoon and it tasted great! I also add a pinch of salt when I remember because they say it makes it less bitter tasting. It whipped up perfectly in just a couple of minutes.
So far I have added…
- Maple Extract
- Banana Extract
- Caramel Extract
- Homemade Vanilla
- Integral Collagen
- A pinch of salt to reduce bitterness
What else would you add?
I often don’t use all the whip I make, so I freeze the rest! It stays soft and frothy so I can just scoop out a spoonful and stir it into my milk! It doesn’t get very hard.
Let me know in the comments if you tried it and if you love it or hate it!
You can also check out my original post about trying it with sugar and chocolate milk!
I have tried making it a few times and I can never get it right! I’m wondering if it’s because I’m using brown sugar? I will try again this weekend.
I haven’t tried it with brown sugar! I’ve heard it works with honey but I haven’t tried that either.
I finally tried it with brown sugar! It worked great for me! The biggest mistakes I see are not using INSTANT coffee, or using too big of a bowl for the amount you’re making. If you want to share your ingredients and supplies with me I would be happy to help you figure it out!
I’m really surprised that almond milk whipped up ok!? Have you tried any other alternative milks?
The actual whipped part was just the instant coffee, water, and sugar substitute blended together. That is what froths up into the whip that you set on top of whatever milk you prefer. Then you just stir it in and drink! It worked perfectly! I haven’t tried any other alternative milks yet!
I am going to try this recipe. Looks delicious.
It is! It tastes the same as the sugary one to me. Definitely try it!
Looks delicious, I like the brown whip.
But I don’t usually put sugar anyway..
Wow! I can’t imagine it without being sweetened! I am trying to cut down on the sweeteners, so I’m cutting down slowly so it isn’t too much of a shock!
Just tried it and it’s delicious!!! Totally perfect for Florida summers and cutting back on my Starbucks orders.
So glad it worked!! Yes, they will be so nice on a hot day! Thanks for the comment! 😁
I tried making this and it was so good! However, I used white sugar but next time I will use an artificial sweetener. This is a good drink to indulge in and gives me that extra boost of energy just when I need it.
You can do so many different variations and it will still work! Thanks for the comment!
Being a new diabetic this is right up my alley. I have not heard of the Monkfruit sweetener. I will have to look into that as I am allergic to the Stevia Plant.
I really hope you find something that works for you!! There are so many good (and mostly healthy) sugar free options!
I am trying this in the morning. It looks so good!
Let me know how it turns out if you’d like!! 🙂
I’ve been meaning to try this, but knew the calorie overload would kill me. I’m very excited to try your recipe!
Yes! I have made it with sugar and sugar free and I honestly don’t taste a difference between them! I hope you like it!
Oh wow this looks delicious! Will definitely be trying this. Thanks for sharing x
Thanks for reading! I hope you like it!!
Looks delicious, I would love to try both with ice
or without..
Yes, it’s really good both ways!
I’ve been obsessed with this stuff for about 2 months. Ow. Never tried sugar free though!
I’ve been loving it! The sugar free tastes pretty much the same to me!
I am a life long Diabetic (30 years out of 31 years old) and am so excited to try this! Do you think it would be possible to do it with stevia and an espresso shot instead of instant coffee and hot water?
Hi Brittany! The reaction will only work with instant coffee. It won’t whip with any other kind of coffee. But you could use stevia! It just needs to be instant (either regular or decaf), mixed with water. Some people don’t use any sweetener and it still works.
